“Thou is the pronoun for wooing, and Romeo and Juliet as iconic lovers provide us with a benchmark in this respect: Romeo uses thou to Juliet from the moment of their first meeting, Juliet uses it from the balcony scene onwards, and they use it with absolute consistency. No other pair of lovers exchanges thou with anything like this consistency: for Romeo and Juliet, their love is a given, fixed and unalterable; it is threatened not from inside but from the world outside. The lovers in the comedies are assailed by the vagaries of their own emotions, by pride, anger, uncertainty, infidelity, misunderstanding, confusion, desperation, devotion; and these fluctuations of feeling are reflected in their pronoun choices.”
